Space debris, commonly known as space junk is a big problem that comes from old satellites that are not in use anymore and are just roaming in open space. Junks also include broken rocket parts and bits of junk that come from space collisions. This article will explain why space junk is a serious issue for our satellites and astronauts.

What is Space Debris?

Space debris is what we call space junk in simple words, they are the objects that are roaming in space and are unused man-made objects and broken objects from different things that we have sent into space these objects are floating around the Earth. This includes:

  • Old Satellites: Objects that are just floating around include old satellites that are of no use anymore and can be dangerous.
  • Rocket Parts: Rockets that carry Astronauts to space have also broken parts roaming in space because rockets have to break their parts to maintain their weight for space gravity.
  • Fragments: Small portions from collisions or explosions.

Why is Space Junk a Problem?

Collision Risks:

Space debris is dangerous because in space there is no gravity and speed can’t be controlled so these objects move rapidly, they can catch speed up to 17,500 miles per hour! At this rapid pace, even tiny pieces of objects can cause serious problems for anything or anyone. Space debris is increasing in number because these objects hit satellites and other objects which creates more debris in space which increases more chances of collisions occurring. This cycle can make some orbits too dangerous to use.

Threat to Satellites:

Satellites play a crucial role in our communication these days, they help us in forecasting the weather and also in GPS. So if space debris hits satellites it can damage or break the system and disrupt our lives leading to big problems and expensive repairs or replacements.

Danger to Astronauts:

Astronauts are likely to be hit by space debris in space because they have to maintain their rockets and have to step out of them in open space, and because there is very little light in space, unable to see in the dark makes their job even harder. When they are on missions, like those on the International Space Station (ISS), are also at risk. Space debris could hit their spacecraft, endangering their lives and their missions.

Difficult to Fix:

Keeping track of all this debris is tough. Organizations watch the space junk, but predicting and avoiding collisions is difficult because the debris moves so fast and there’s so much of it. Removing debris is also complicated and expensive, with technologies like nets and robot arms are still being worked on.

What Can Be Done?

To tackle space debris, we want to:

  • Track Debris Better: Improve radar and tracking systems to keep an eye on space junk and predict where it will go.
  • Follow Guidelines: Use guidelines to limit the creation of new space junk.
  • Remove Debris: Develop and use new technology to capture and safely remove space debris.

Space debris is becoming a big problem for scientists and astronauts and is also putting satellites at risk as well. As we keep exploring space, it’s important to address this issue to keep space safe and usable. By improving how we track debris, following guidelines, and finding ways to remove it, we can help protect our space missions for the future.
